The Toronto Argonauts are mourning the loss of former halfback and Grey Cup Champion Ted Toogood who passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday.
A talented halfback and kick returner, Toogood played five years for the Argos, winning two Grey Cups, including the memorable 1950 Mud Bowl vs. Winnipeg at Varsity Stadium. He played in 52 regular season games and 7 playoff games while donning the Double Blue.
Former teammate and current Argos Football Consultant Nick Volpe was a good friend of Toogood and commented: “Pound for pound, Ted Toogood was the best halfback in the CFL. We both weighed 162 lbs. and we were both 5-feet, 10-inches when we played together, first at the University of Toronto and then for the Argonauts. He was so quick and so good that he once ran two punts back for touchdowns in one game – that was back when blocking wasn’t allowed on kick returns. The first touchdown was on a reverse and on the second I yelled to him to run straight up the field and he scored!”
Following his football career, Toogood was named Athletic Director at Ryerson Polytechnical Institute and Etobicoke Collegiate.
In 1999, he was inducted into the University of Toronto Sports Hall of Fame and was also named to the school’s All-Century team. In 2010, he was entered into the Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame.
Toogood has elected to donate his brain to the Canadian Sports Concussion Project at Toronto Western Hospital, along with former Argo Bobby Kuntz who passed away last February.
