TORONTO – Tonight, the Toronto Argonauts Football Club unveiled its new 2012 on-field player and premier replica jerseys at a special season ticket holder event with over 1800 fans in attendance. The new jerseys were influenced by elements of four eras of Argos football and look to the bright future of the franchise in the 100th Grey Cup year.
Featuring a classic football jersey design, the Argonauts have returned to their true Cambridge and Oxford University double blue colours inspired by the Argonaut Rowing Club that founded the team 139 years ago. The new striping on the sleeves is reminiscent of the uniforms of the 1968-1975 era when Argonauts football influenced popular culture in the City of Toronto like no other team.
Commented Chris Rudge, Executive Chairman and CEO, “The Toronto Argonauts are a piece of the cultural fabric of Toronto and it’s time to celebrate our deep roots of tradition and influence in our city. The Argos have brought more championships to our city than any other sports team and our blues have shaped the colours of many other teams in our city and outside it. There is so much to be excited about and these new jerseys are the first of many celebrations we plan to bring to the GTA this year and beyond.”
The launch is a part of the new Reebok jersey reengineering program for teams across the CFL. The new Double Blue jerseys were unveiled this evening for the first time in a fashion show featuring many current players, alumni and cheerleaders.
The team also announced that effective May 15, 2012, its new jerseys and team apparel will be available for retail purchase at Real Sports Apparel through a new partnership with the Argonauts. As well, Toronto Argonauts gear will continue to be available at TBJ at Gate 5 of Rogers Centre.
The event reflected on the storied tradition of North America’s oldest pro sports franchise, encapsulated the inspirations that went into the jersey design, and focused on the evolution of the Argos for the 2012 season and into the future.
