Toronto – To find a true philanthropist in every definition of the word, one doesn’t have to look further than Herbert H. Carnegie. While he was an established hockey player for Quebec and Ontario, and a champion golfer, perhaps his most amazing accomplishment was the creation of the Future Aces Foundation. The Future Aces foundation, to this day, has awarded more than half a million dollars in scholarships to young people who have made a difference in their community.
As a leader in the community, the Toronto Argonauts’ work through their Huddle Up Bullying Prevention Program, presented by Tim Hortons, which recently completed its 11th year, is being recognized at the Amazing Aces Character Awards Gala on May 23, 2012. The gala is presented by the Herbert H. Carnegie Future Aces Foundation, and the Argos will be presented with the Education Award for being youth advocates of bullying prevention in our city. This year will be the first time ever that the award has been given to an oranization and not an individual.
When speaking about receiving the award, Jason Colero, Director of Education Programs and the Argos Foundation, was excited, “It’s always amazing to know that a program like Huddle Up is helping kids. That in itself is an award, but to be recognized by such a prestigious foundation is an honour for the entire Toronto Argonauts organization as well as Tim Hortons. If not for the commitment of our players and Tim Hortons we would not be in this envious position today.”
The Huddle Up Bullying Prevention Program, presented by Tim Hortons, was a great success again this year. Colero remembers what the program started out as, and is amazed at what it has become: “It’s incredible that 11 years ago the Huddle Up program was in just 20 schools, and now the program has evolved from being known provincially to being recognized on a national level.”
Over the last decade, Huddle-Up has reached close to 300,000 students across the GTA. In 2009, the program was added to the Ministry of Education’s Registry of Bullying Prevention Programs, making the Argos the only professional Canadian sports team to have a program registered.
While the Argonauts are honoured to be recognized with the award, the club is thrilled that the Huddle Up program has been such a positive influence across the GTA and has made such a profound impact on our community.
