MISSISSAUGA–Day one of training camp has finally kicked off, and the new coaching staff had one clear goal: high tempo and high intensity. Right from the get go, every play was run at 100% by rookies and veterans alike.
All eyes were on Ricky Ray and he did not disappoint; Ray completed his first five attempts during the twelve vs. twelve drill, with every pass simply dropping into the receivers hands.
Ray quickly renewed his chemistry with former teammates Maurice Mann and Jason Barnes. They seemingly haven’t lost a step and look to be poised to connect for many receptions as training camp continues into the season.
Mann and rookie Ahmad Carroll developed some spirited competition early on during one-on-one’s. Carroll likes to speak up, and Mann wouldn’t back down. This just set the pace for what was an extremely intense and competitive segment of practice.
On the defensive side of the ball, second year linebacker Anthony Cannon was extremely fired up on multiple occasions during skelly and team drills. His enthusiasm got the rest of the defence in the talking mood, and the intensity soon picked up after that.
On the inside run drills, both the defensive and offensive lines held nothing back as they lashed out nearly six months of non-football contact on one another. However, it was all in the name of bettering themselves, as shortly thereafter they could be seen resting with each other in between practices.
With the coaching staff preaching high intensity, it was up to the veteran players to lead by example and practice hard. Chad Owens did just that. He was going full speed at all times, always first in line for drills. He also had a great showing during one-on-one’s. He had to leave early during the second practice, but no need to panic, it was only because of leg cramps.
After day one of camp, the players may have been walking around campus a bit gingerly, but their spirits are high with renewed optimism. These players are quickly embracing the new level of intensity that Scott Milanovich and his coaching staff have brought to the team.
Camp continues tomorrow with day two, and players will once again be on the upper field of UTM from 7:30 to noon.
