TORONTO–On Thursday, June 7th, 2012, Toronto Argonauts alumnus, and current football operations consultant, Nick Volpe will be inducted into the University of Toronto’s hall of fame as a builder.
Volpe attended the college of education in the late 1940’s and played for the Varsity Blues while he attended. He was part of the 1948 championship team that brought home the Yates Cup.
He also played a role in saving the team in the 90’s when a lack of funds was threatening the football program. He and several other former players organized a telephone campaign to raise funds, and they were successful in saving the Varsity Blues football program that still runs to this day.
He played for the Double Blue from 1949-52, winning two Grey Cups in 1950 and 1952. Volpe was actually named MVP of the infamous 1950 “Mud Bowl”, where he kicked two field goals in a winning effort for the Argos; 62 years later, Volpe still has the iconic game ball. During his Argo career, he was a place kicker while also serving as a back-up Quarterback.
