TORONTO – Every week at Argonauts.ca we have been profiling a head to head match-up that will help determine the outcome of that weeks game. We’ve looked at the running backs, the receivers and even special teams but there is one clear matchup this week that is sure to determine the week 5 result. That match-up is no other then the future Hall Of Fame Quarterbacks that will be lining up against each other on Friday night.
Sitting atop both the All-Time CFL passing yards list and the 2012 CFL passing yards list (1,316 yards) is none other than Anthony Calvillo, the one player in the CFL that rivals Ray for poise under centre.
Though many have talked as if Calvillo could be in his last seasons as a CFL QB, you wouldn’t know it by his stat line. On top of his yards totals and 10 TD passes, Calvillo has gone 94 for 147 this season, good for a completion percentage of 63.9% and a QB rating of 106.9. Calvillo shows no signs of slowing down this season and has the Als tied at the top of the East with the Argos and Ticats.
A large part of shutting down Calvillo will be for the Argos secondary to lock down and do their best to eliminate the Alouettes receiving core. That means clogging throwing lanes, playing tight man coverage and leaving no man unchecked. If the Argos can limit S.J. Green, Brandon London, Jamel Richardson and Brandon Whitaker (all in the top 20 in CFL receiving yards) then the Argos should come out on top in Montreal.

After recently passing Argonauts legend Doug Flutie for 7th All-Time in CFL passing yards, Ricky Ray has not skipped a beat this season as he continues to adapt to his new team. A lot was made of Ray transitioning into the Scott Milanovich offence, but seeing as though he sits number two in the league in passing yards (1,262), that talk has been dismissed. Ray also boasts an impressive 69.5 completion percentage on a league high 105 completions to go along with 151 passing attempts (also a league high). Ray has also accumulated 6 TD passes and a QB rating of 97.1%.
Ray has had success against Montreal in his career as he has not passed for under 200 yards against them since 2008. In his past six regular season games against the Als, Ray has averaged 280 yards through the air. Last season, Ray went for 213 yards and 245 yards with 1 TD pass and 1 INT. For the Argos to come away with the win in Montreal, Ray and the Argos will have to find the end zone on multiple occasions and be sure to continue to improve their red zone efficiency.
Look for Ray to spread the ball to his troop of receivers as Jason Barnes, Andre Durie, Chad Owens and Dontrelle Inman look to ravage the Als secondary and make a statement about being the most explosive offence in the CFL.
