MISSISSAUGA – In an epic Labour Day Classic win, two different members of the Toronto Argonauts experienced career games to earn CFL Player of the Week honours for Week 10. The Flyin’ Hawaiian, Chad Owens, and first year DB Ahmad Carroll have earned CFL Offensive Player of the Week and CFL Defensive Player of the Week, respectively.
WR/KR Chad Owens not only set a career-high with 11 receptions for 176 yards and a touchdown, but also established a new Argos record for all-purpose yards in a single game with 402. The previous Argos record of 401 yards was set by the legendary Raghib “Rocket” Ismail in 1992. Owens was instrumental in the win and perhaps no play was bigger than the spectacular one-handed catch for a first down on the Double Blue’s final fourth quarter drive to eventually setup the game-winning field goal. During his record-breaking day, Owens added 136 yards on kickoff returns and 90 yards on punt returns. His 402 all-purpose yards stands as the third highest single-game total in CFL history, behind Larry Taylor (441 in 2012) and Albert Johnson III (474 in 2000). Owens now sits in second place in the CFL in both receptions (53) and receiving yards (764) this season. This is the second time in his career that Owens has been named a CFL Offensive Player of the Week (Week 7, 2010), and the eighth time overall he’s been named a player of the week.
Last year, Owens became the first player in professional football history to record consecutive 3,000+ all-purpose yards seasons, and now he’s just 773 yards from reaching the milestone in a third straight campaign. DB Ahmad Carroll earned his first career CFL interception in Week 9 versus the Calgary Stampeders, but it will be the one he had on Labour Day against the Tiger-Cats at Ivor Wynne that he tells tales about. Shadowing the ever-dangerous Chris Williams, Carroll jumped in front of a Henry Burris pass and took it 37 yards into the endzone for his first career CFL touchdown. At the time, the Argos trailed by two points, and Carroll’s ‘pick six’ gave the Argos the lead with just over seven minutes to go in the game. To go along with his interception for a touchdown, Carroll also had one defensive tackle and limited receiver Chris Williams to only one reception en route to his first Defensive Player of the Week honour.
