TORONTO– On the field, this week’s game against the Montreal Alouettes is an opportunity for the Double Blue to secure a share of first place in the East Division. For some members of the Argonauts, however, Sunday’s CFL Pink game, presented by the Toronto Sun, is significant for more personal reasons.
Argonauts receiver Jason Barnes lost his mother, Ann, to lung cancer in 2007. Brandon Isaac’s mother, Sandra, passed of cervical cancer in May of this year. Kevin Huntley’s grandmother, Bertha, is a breast cancer survivor. Toronto’s Andrew Jones lost his mother, Luella, to pancreatic cancer when he was very young. At 1:00 p.m. this Sunday, October 14 at Rogers Centre, each of these players and many of their teammates will accent themselves and their uniforms with Pink Reebok gear to support fundraising and awareness efforts in the fight to end women’s cancers.
Fans can stop by Gate 11 anytime before or after the game and climb aboard the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation’s Pink Tour Bus. On board, there will be information about breast health, eligible women will be able to sign up for a mammogram, and all visitors will be invited to sign the bus to show their support! After Breast Cancer (ABC), a group established to help breast cancer survivors, will also be set up at Gate 11 and on the concourse with information about how fans can help. On their way into the stadium, fans are encouraged to stop by the barbeque outside Gate 11 for a gourmet sausage prepared by Marc Angelo Foods. All proceeds from the barbeque will benefit the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. As well, all proceeds from the game’s 50/50 draw will benefit the CBCF.
At halftime, more than 150 Argos Cheerleaders Alumni have been inspired to take the field to perform a routine that they will dedicate to former cheerleader Suzanne Housego who passed away from breast cancer on October 14, 2011. Also during halftime, the in-stadium video board will display the Ribbon of Strength which will include all of the names, submitted by fans, of those affected by women’s cancers.
Inside the stadium, other activities will include electric performances by Danceworks of Mississauga and the Maple Academy of Dance. As well, members of the Mississauga Football League will line the home fan tunnel, and The Canadian Children’s Opera Choir will sing the national anthem.
Fans are invited to join Argos players and cheerleaders at the Official Post-Game Party at Shoeless Joe’s Sports Grill at 276 King Street West, for special food and drink deals!
