TORONTO – This past Sunday, Chad Owens once again etched his name into the CFL record books.
Owens became the fastest player in league history to accumulate 10,000 combined yards, reaching the mark in just 50 CFL games.
He broke the previous record of 64 games which was held by the Bombers former dynamic kick returner, Charles Roberts. The rest of the top five consists of Keith Stokes (71 games), Mike Pringle (73 games), Mike “Pinball” Clemons (75 games) and Jason Armstead (75 games).
When asked about passing the 10,000 mark, Owens was humble and gave the credit to his team stating, “[The Record] is great for this organization. As a group, what we’ve been able to accomplish these last few years has been remarkable and I just happen to be the beneficiary. I’m truly honoured to have reached this milestone with my teammates.”
Owens went on to say that this is something great for his family and that “it will be great for my kids one day.”
However, with the record coming off the heels of a 24-12 loss to the Montreal Allouettes, the milestone is nothing more than a silver lining for the Flyin’ Hawaiian.
“For me it’s about winning. It’s about moving forward and ultimately winning a Grey Cup, that’s the ultimate goal and that is what this room is focused on,” stated the league’s fourth leading receiver.
With the loss, the Argos have all but lost the opportunity to finish in first in the East, and must now turn their attention to the Blue Bombers on Friday night. Though last in the East, the Bombers have shown some life of late beating Montreal two weeks ago and playing a close game against Calgary in week 15.
With a win, the boatmen will put themselves in an excellent position to play a home playoff game in front of the Double Blue faithful.
