Double Blue Draft Retrospective

ARGONAUTS.CA STAFF

TORONTO – With the 2013 CFL Entry Draft on Monday, the Toronto Argonauts are preparing with seven picks in seven rounds, including three picks in the fifth.

Bradwell, Black, Eppele, Watt, Reinders, Kouame and Robinson, what do these seven men have in common? These players were drafted by the Toronto Argonauts and years later, they captured the 2012 Grey Cup Championship with the team.

In four seasons with the Boatmen, receiver Mike Bradwell has played in 70 regular season games and caught 79 passes for 946 yards. Bradwell, out of the University of McMaster, was selected 13th overall in the 2008 draft.  Over the years, he has played a big role on special teams and evolved into a go-to hands receiver on all onside kicks.

Saginaw Valley State product Matt Black is going into his fifth season with the club after dressing in 56 regular season games. The safety set career highs during the 2012 season with 13 defensive tackles and 20 special teams tackles. After being selected 45th overall in the 2008draft, Black has recorded 22 defensive tackles and 53 special teams’ tackles over four years with the club.

Guard Joe Eppele was selected second overall in the 2010 draft after playing his college ball at Washington State University.  In three seasons with the club, Eppele has appeared in 42 regular season games for the Boatmen.  This past offseason the club extended the offensive lineman’s contract to see him in Double Blue for seasons to come.

A native of North Vancouver, Spencer Watt is heading into his fourth year with the Boatmen. Watt was selected in the third round of the 2010 draft after playing at Simon Frasier University. In three seasons with the Argos, he has played in 45 regular season games and has caught 77 passes for a total of 970 yards.  A free agent this past offseason, Watt was extended by the club and will look to improve on the career year he had in 2012.

After pursuing NFL opportunities with the Cleveland Browns and the New York Giants, Joel Reinders was added the Argonauts roster late in the 2012 season. The University of Waterloo product was drafted by the club in the fourth round of the 2010 draft. The offensive lineman is heading into his first full season with the Boatmen after winning the Grey Cup in 2012 and will battle in training camp for a starting spot on the offensive line.

Receiver Djems Kouame was selected in the third round of 2011, but has battled injuries through his first two seasons which have limited his playing opportunities. The University of Montreal alumni has dressed in eight games for the Double Blue.

Another third round selection in 2011, Alexander “Zander” Robinson has played in 34 games, compiling 18 special team tackles.  The University of Western product will be looking to add to his production totals as he prepares for his third year with the club following a 2012 season that saw Zander play full-time special teams and back-up defensive line.  With many starting spots open on the defensive line in 2013, Robinson could be poised for his breakout CFL season.
