OAKVILLE – Defensive Coordinator, Chris Jones ended today with a smile as this day was one for the defence. Across all units, the defence exemplified their speed, athleticism and ball pursuit on every single play and drill.
Practice number one was highlighted with multiple plays from that aforementioned unit. Second year LB Bryan Payton and first year DL Kiante Tripp both caused pressure up the middle during team drills, each registering a swatted pass.
DB Matt Black continued to prove that he is poised to step into the spotlight on this defence, hauling in his second interception in consecutive days during the team drills segment.

The one-on-one portions were hotly contested, as nobody seems willing to give the coaching staff any reason to question whether or not they deserve to make the final roster once training camp is wrapped up. Standouts from today included SB Chad Owens, WR Dontrelle Inman, & DB Brent Vinson.
As the special teams units practiced on the field, “The Chad’s” (Owens & Kackert) took the opportunity to practice their receiving skills. One of their methods included strapping on a pair of performance training glasses that confuse the eye with blinking lights. You will be happy to know not one pass was dropped.
Although the calendar may have read June 6, the temperature indicated something more akin to the month of October, and some of the players from the southern parts of the USA quickly learned what it would be like once autumn in Toronto rolls around. The main theory to block out the cold seemed to be constant positive reinforcement, as phrases like “It’s not even that cold” and “I can play in this everyday” could be heard throughout the course of the stretching period.
Unlikely; but we like the enthusiasm.
PLAY OF THE DAY
Newcomer DB Quinten Lawrence, in his first practice in the CFL, quickly enamored his new teammates by breaking sharply to the ball and sprawling out for an interception during team drills. He didn’t even have a name on his back yet, but we assure his name was acknowledged after this play.
