MISSISSAUGA – Following an up tempo practice at Holy Trinity yesterday, the Boatmen remained at UTM for practice on a sunny Saturday morning.
LB Major Culbert continued to impress in Training Camp following his five defensive tackle, one sack effort during the Argos first pre-season game in Winnipeg. During a red zone drill, Culbert burst through the line and came away with an emphatic ball swat, ending the play before it even began.
On offence, the receivers and quarterbacks continued to work on their chemistry which was apparent during the skelly portion of practice. On a corner route, with the defensive back following Spencer Watt downfield, Ricky Ray knew exactly where to place the ball as he hit Watt in perfect stride for what would have been a long TD catch and run. Clearly, Ricky Ray’s touch has come into camp in fine form.
The number of targets that WR Juaquin Iglesias saw in the pre-season game continued to be apparent on Saturday, as he made several catches during the skelly portion of practice. Both QB Trevor Harris and QB Zach Collaros looked Iglesias’ way, finding him over the middle on multiple occasions.
RB Chad Kackert also had the opportunity to show off his soft hands making a tip-toe grab towards the endzone pylon. Planting his feet right at the corner, Kack caught the ball with his feet in bounds leaning just over to pull the ball back into the field of play. A great show of field awareness from the 100th Grey Cup MVP.
Back on the defensive side of the football, DB Antareis Bryan is beginning to look more and more comfortable in his role in the Double Blue defence. Showing a greater understanding of Chris Jones’ defensive schemes, Bryan displayed blanket coverage and solid timing on his defensive switches.
Finally, the offensive line deserves a collective shout out. Not only did they provide the Argos offence with the time and opportunity to rack up over 500+ yards of offence in the pre-season game against Winnipeg, but the group as a whole has looked stellar during Training Camp. With so many quality bodies in camp, it will be interesting to see who cracks the final 46.
PLAY OF THE DAY
Today the play of the day has to go to Travis, the Jr. Admiral. Son of Argos Admiral Clay Chisolm, Travis came out to practice today and stepped up to the mic to interview some of his Argos heroes. Talking to Chad Kackert, Kevin Huntley, Mitchell Gale and Khalif Mitchell, Travis looked like a future host of ArgosTV. Travis even had the guts to ask Khalif Mitchell, “What do quarterbacks taste like?” to which Mitchell responded with… “Birthday Cake”. Check out the Instagram photo of the interaction here.
