OAKVILLE – On a rainy Sunday morning, the Argonauts took to the field at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Secondary School following a short walk through at UTM. Now a few days removed from the preseason game in Winnipeg, the focus has now turned to preseason game number two against Montreal at Varsity Stadium on June 20.
Though the turf remained slick for the duration of practice, that did not stop the offence from showing their speed, utilizing the full range of coach Milanovich’s play book. Ray and company looked in perfect sync on Sunday morning in preparation for game action at Varsity Stadium.
The offensive highlight of the came via a great play call that saw Ricky Ray find Chad Kackert in space with the whole field in front of him. “Kack Attack” made the easy reception and turned on the burners making sure no Argos defender got anywhere near the 44 on his back.
WR Trent Guy also continued to impress at Argos camp, as he gets more acclimated with his new teammates. Guy’s most impressive play of the day was on a diving catch near the sideline, showing both field awareness and poise to make the grab and keep his feet in bounds.
Finally, RB Curtis Steele has seemingly made a point of building off a strong performance in Winnipeg, as he showed great burst and anticipation on Sunday. Waiting for blocks and running lanes to develop, Steele took one straight up the middle for what would have been a long TD run.
On the defensive side of the ball, LB Bryan Payton had one of his best days of training camp as he continually brought pressure during the skelly portion of practice. Payton was able to get to the quarterbacks on multiple occasions, at one point coming free off the edge for what would have been an open shot at the opposing quarterback. We can assure you he peeled off in plenty of time to avoid # 15 in the red jersey.
Another to impress was DB Quinten Lawrence who bit on a route and came away with an interception for the defence. On a gloomy day, Lawrence added a little ‘cele’ to brigthen everyones day.
PLAY OF THE DAY
The play of the day today came even before the helmets were strapped on. Newcomer DT Khalif Mitchell, who has been a pleasure during the first three weeks of training camp, made sure he was vocal to all of his teammates. During the stretching period, Mitchell ensured to let his teammates know that the rain would not hinder their work ethic and mindset. His teammates responded with a spirited practice, and even a few dance moves here-and-there. You sort of had to be there to appreciate them…
