TORONTO – As announced earlier this evening during the CFL on TSN Top 50 Players show, SB/KR Chad Owens has been voted the best player in the Canadian Football League entering the 2013 season. In total, six Argonauts were named to the prestigious list and Owens along with starting quarterback Ricky Ray were voted as two of the top three players on the list of 50. The CFL on TSN Top 50 Players list was compiled with input from CFL on TSN personalities and select CFL writers from across Canada.
The “Flyin’ Hawaiian” enjoyed one of the most prolific CFL seasons ever in 2012. Owens became the first player in CFL history to lead the league in both receiving yards (1,328) and kick return yards (2,418), and also broke a 15 year-old record held by Michael

“Pinball” Clemons for most Combined Yards in a single season with 3,862. For his efforts, Owens was named the CFL Most Outstanding Player and CFL All-Star at receiver while helping lead the Argonauts to a memorable victory in the 100th Grey Cup championship on November 25, 2012 at Rogers Centre. Owens was red-hot during last season’s post-season Grey Cup run. He scored his first punt return touchdown of the year (vs. Edmonton in the Eastern Semi-Final at Rogers Centre), set a club single-game playoff record with 11 receptions for 207 yards in the Eastern Final against Montreal, and scored the first touchdown for the Double Blue in the 100th Grey Cup victory.
Commented Owens, “This honour is a testament to the hard work and dedication of my coaches and teammates. And while this is truly humbling, the ultimate goal was, and is always, to win the Grey Cup. To be acknowledged like this is the icing on the cake of what was an unbelievable 2012 season. I am very excited to join my team on the field for 2013 as we work towards another Grey Cup championship.”
Two spots behind Owens, at third on the list, sits the maestro of the Argos offence, QB Ricky Ray.In his first season behind centre for the Double Blue, Ray helped bring exciting and entertaining football back to the city of Toronto by putting the ball into the hands of his playmakers with greater accuracy than anyone in team history. Ray’s completion percentage (68.6%) was a new single-season club record and his best since the 2008 season. Ray dressed and started in 14 regular season games and all three playoff games for the 100th Grey Cup champions. He finished the year with 4,059 yards and 20 touchdowns.
The list of Top 50 players included four other members of Toronto’s roster. 2012 CFL All-Star DB Patrick Watkins lands at #22 on the list while 100th Grey Cup MVP RB Chad Kackert sits four spots behind him at #26. Down the list at #42 is LB Brandon Isaac. One of the newest members of the Double Blue, DT Khalif Mitchell, finds himself at #44. The complete list of players is available at TSN.ca .
