Mississauga Music Walk Of Fame To Honour “the Dash”

TORONTO – It was announced last week that the Mississauga Music Walk of Fame will be honouring the legacy of the late Charlie “Chick” Camilleri, known better as “The Dash” who passed away on December 21, 2011.

Camilleri spent three seasons with the Boatmen from 1946-1948, which included two Grey Cup victories.  During his time in Double Blue he played alongside some Argonaut greats including Joe Krol, Zeke O’Connor and Nick Volpe.  After his playing days, Camilleri made his mark on the Canadian music scene as an executive with Columbia Records for 35 years. Camilleri remained heavily involved with the Argonauts Alumni following his playing career.

Prior to football, Chick was a World War II veteran serving as a part of the Canadian Navy.  He is remembered for his volunteerism at Variety Club Canada as a key driving force of the organization.  Due to his amazing work, he was a recipient of the Heart Award which is the Children’s Charity’s most prestigious mark of distinction. The award honours individuals and organizations that have made exceptional philanthropic contributions throughout Ontario and Canada.

Camilleri will be inducted into the Mississauga Music Walk of Fame as a builder based on his time spent with Columbia Records.  The Mississauga Music Walk of Fame was created in Memorial Park in Port Credit, Mississauga in 2012 and was launched during the Southside Shuffle music festival.  Along with Camilleri, four others will be given spots this year on the MMWOF.  Opera Mississauga and City Centre Musical Productions founder Eleanor Calbes, lead guitarist for rock group Triumph Rik Emmett, the long-time singer for Canada’s best-known blues band Chuck Jackson, and innovative jazz pianist and composer Nancy Walker, the 2008 National Jazz Awards keyboardist of the year.

Jim Tovey, Ward 1 councilor and former musician who founded the Walk of Fame and chairs the selection committee, says this year’s recipients “are totally outstanding and deserving individuals — for their talent and for the way they’ve contributed to our community. The variety of musical communities represented speaks to how broad and rich our musical heritage is in Mississauga.”
