TORONTO – The Toronto Argonauts Football Club is saddened to learn of the passing of former WR Peter Titanic. Titanic was a member of three Grey Cup championship teams for the Argonauts (1946, 1947 and 1950). He passed away from complications due to Alzheimer’s disease at the age of 93.
Commented former Argonauts teammate, Bud Fowler, “I knew Peter a long time; he and I grew up in Mimico together. I only played one year with him as an Argo in 1950, and although he was a quiet guy he was an outstanding athlete. Even at the end of his career he was a dominant player.”
Titanic was a true athlete while growing up in Mimico, Ontario. He excelled at football, fastball and basketball. Titanic’s first sports love was fastball and once competed in the world championships as a catcher. He also won a city football championship while attending Mimico High School. He later suited up for Balmy Beach of the Interprovincial Rugby Football Union and was one of the original members of the Toronto Indians who competed in the Ontario Rugby Football Union. Titanic played four seasons for the Argonauts from 1946-1950 and won three championships while playing with greats including the late Joe Krol and Royal Copeland.
A long-time resident of Newmarket, Ontario, he is survived by his wife of 64 years, Margaret, his two sons, Peter and Paul, four grand children and one great granddaughter. His sons both excelled at hockey while growing up. Peter played at Cornell University, and Paul, who once served as the head hockey coach at the University of Toronto, played at Bowling Green State University.
A public visitation will be held this Sunday, January 26 from 1:00 p.m.–3:00 p.m. and from 5:00 p.m.–7:00 p.m. at Dixon-Garland Funeral Home, 166 Main Street North, Markham, Ontario. The family requests that donations be made to a charity of choice.
