TORONTO – The Toronto Argonauts Football Club is saddened to learn of the passing of Fred “Scooter” Doty. A two-time Grey Cup champion with the Argos, he passed away peacefully on Sunday while surrounded by family. He was 90 years old.
A dynamic two-way player in his era, Doty won Grey Cups in 1945 and 1947 while in Double Blue. At just 5-feet, 6-inches tall and 140 pounds, he could play quarterback, was tough to tackle and a tenacious defender. Following the 1945 season he decided to join the University of Toronto squad, but still managed to play three games for the Argos. He was named a conference all-star at quarterback for the Varsity Blues. Doty returned to the Argonauts full-time in 1946 and finished his career in 1949.
Doty served as a Lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Air Force in World War 2. He learned the game of football while playing pickup on the barracks in Calgary, Alberta. He graduated university with a Civil Engineering degree and went on to be named Vice President of Johns Manville (Canada) and President of Dufferin Concrete Products. Doty was an active member of the Argos Alumni Association until his passing.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Beverly, and their sons Tobin and Cole. Tobin played five years for the University of Toronto Varsity Blues.
