TORONTO – The Toronto Argonauts Football Club is saddened to learn of the passing of John Barrow. A member of the Canadian Football Hall of Fame, Barrow was the Argonauts’ General Manager from 1971 to 1975.
Barrow led the Argonauts to one Grey Cup appearance in 1971, an eventual 14-11 loss to the Calgary Stampeders. In his first season at the helm, he helped attract players like K Zenon Andrusyshyn, DE Jim Stillwagon, QB Joe Theismann and RB Leon McQuay to Toronto, and later claimed TE Peter Muller (1973) and CB Larry Uteck (1974) as territorial exemptions during his tenure. He was named to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1976 and was voted the seventeenth best player in the CFL’s Top 50 Players of all-time poll conducted by TSN.
Barrow began and ended his playing career as a defensive tackle for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats from 1957 to 1970, during which he was named a CFL All-Star eleven times, the most in the history of Canadian football. As a Tiger-Cat, Barrow won four (4) Grey Cups (1957, 1963, 1965, 1967) and appeared in five (5) other Grey Cup games (1958, 1959, 1961, 1962, 1964).
He spent his college career at the University of Florida where he was named First-Team All-Southeastern Conference, a Football Writers Association of America First-Team All-American, and team captain in his senior year of 1956. He was also inducted into the University of Florida Athletic Hall of Fame as a “Gator Great”.
