Training Camp Diary: Day Five

TORONTO – Day five of training camp offered a brief respite for Argonauts veterans and hopefuls, with the coaches scheduling a team yoga session in lieu of practice to go along with the team and positional meetings.

On Wednesday, day five was back to normal as the Argonauts hit the field bright and early for another doubleheader. After a stormy start to 2015 training camp, the weather on Wednesday remained bright and sunny, much to delight of Toronto’s players and coaches. Once again, defence was the story of the day for the Argos, with several errant throws finding their ways into the waiting arms of defenders.

DL Martez Wilson got in on the turnover fun, dropping back into coverage during team drills and taking a pass from QB Logan Kilgore the other way for a sure touchdown, had it not been for the swarm of celebrating defenders in his way.

Bodies were flying and it’s clear that the veterans, forced to catch up on a three-day head start by the rookies, have found their groove. Much more time was dedicated to 12-on-12 matchups as the Argonauts’ coaching staff assess which players have stayed sharp in meetings and possess the most thorough knowledge of Toronto’s playbook and systems.

Practice on Wednesday closed with the team huddled around kicker Swayze Waters, pressuring the kicker to miss a field goal from 30 yards out. As you’d expect, even 80+ hulking men in pads and helmets couldn’t knock the always-cool Waters off his game, as he drove two straight through the uprights to end the day’s on-field work.
